| The Soyuz training sim is capable of simulating almost any conceivable emergency in the Soyuz. This control interface is one of two used during the sim sessions by the instructor team, to monitor the crew and to initiate off-nominal scenarios. The instructors can watch the crew on a colour and an infra-red camera, and can alter any parameter in the Soyuz craft. They can also simulate a depress of the capsule by pumping air into our suits - the pressurized suits create a similar feeling to working with the suits in a vacuum. Failures of valves, electronics, sensors, pumps and pipelines are common. The whole gadget is run by mountains of ancient computing infrastructure that hums and clicks like an army of insects. |
